My Summer Reading List

For the last few years, my reading has mostly been contained to stimulating titles like "Information Literacy Instruction", "Perl Programming" or "Encoded Archival Description - Context, Theory and Case Studies". Zzzzzzzz.

I have managed to read a few other things - mostly during the winter and summer breaks. So, for vacation, I've stocked up on books I've been meaning to read. Here's the list.

  • Locke 1928, by Shawna Yang Ryan
  • A Long Way Gone - Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, by Ishmael Beah
  • A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini

I also intend to finish the Chronicles of Narnia over the summer, which has been my bedtime reading for a couple months. And, I plan to read the new Harry Potter book over my birthday weekend in July.

I was just going to get the first two books on the list. But, when I saw Khaled Hosseini had another book out, I had to get it. I bought Kite Runner used to take on our last mini-vacation and couldn't put it down. It was probably the best book I've read in the last 10 years. I was even reading on our bus ride in Mammoth to Devil's Post Pile. It was making me nauseous, but I had to push on. I've heard the new book is as good or better than Kite Runner. Yay!

In addition to the fun titles, I will be reading a book on Spiritual disciplines by a Quaker woman circa 1900, for my women's group. I only have to get 1/3 of the way through that by the end of June, though. Phew!

A good list. I note you did not add my book on the Spanish Civil War, or the book on Basque history you brought back from Portland last year. Wonder why? :-) BTW, I think it was you who told me that the reading of the new Harry Potter will be delayed a week due to some other priority, something about a crit in Albany. It will be waiting for you, Amazon has promised.

c-rick - that is what I will read while I'm 'recovering' from the Albany Crit :)

i loved kit runner.

although i thought the end was out of step with the rest of the book. a little soap operaesque.

but the story was beautiful.

i'm going to read his next one too this summer.

lauren - yeah, the end was a little clunky. And, I could predict a lot of what was going to happen throughout. But, it was so beautiful and heart-wrenching and captivating anyway. I just couldn't put the dang book down.

I just finished a Stephen King book called, The Cell.

TOTAL CRAP! My first SK book ever and I am not impressed.

I also just finished Eldest, the second book in the Eragon series. I would give that B.

I remember reading the Chronicles of Narnia a long time ago. The recent movie was actually quite good I thought.

I read the first Harry Potter book and that was enough for me.

I will have to look up a few of the other ones on your list.

chris - yeah, Harry Potter seems to be love or hate for most people.

And, I've had mixed experience with Stephen King. Some of his books are brilliant (like Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile) and some leave me thinking, "huh?"
