Tailbone update

Well, Rick really stole my thunder with the whole hip thing. Now, my tailbone incident seems quite silly, really. Anyway, a new harder seat was put on the bike a few weeks ago with no change in fit. It seemed better, but I got my first real test last weekend when I did a 3+ hour ride with some steep climbs. My sit bones were a little tender when I returned, but the tailbone was just fine. Yay! Phew! No more inflatable donut for me!

thanks, alicat. I wasn't having trouble on my other bike that had the Brooks saddle, which was firmer. And, the setup is the same other than handlebar height. So, I decided to start with the seat.

A lot of people prefer a harder saddle...I think the key is that your seat bones are the things doing the supporting...not other areas :-). I'm glad to hear your tailbone is out of pain!!!!! Can't have you both out of commission!

Hang in there.

Ali - I will answer for Ms. Chatterbox, and the answer is experience. A few years ago she 'copied' me and started riding with a Brooks B17 on the touring bike. The Brooks is hard, though is has some flex (thick leather suspended front and rear from a metal frame). The B17 is very comfortable over long distances, so she thought having a similarly hard surface to support would be good. Now we just need to couple it with the flex of the B17 :-)

Doggone, I left a long comment re riding with panniers, smelling the roses, riding slow, riding fast, yada yada - and all I meant to say was that riding is something you can do at any speed, at any age (am I not proof?) - but I guess I forgot to publish it. Anyway, I hope you'll still enjoy it 30 years from now, like I do.
